Coaster fans across Northern Europe can mark 2027 in their calendars. Djurs Sommerland will open Midgårdsormen, the region’s very first Hot Racer Coaster to feature inversions. With an investment of more than EUR 14 million, a top speed of 75 km/h and three inversions, the new ride will also be the tallest and fastest Hot Racer Coaster in Europe. Named after the legendary Midgard Serpent from Norse mythology, it will rise in the expanded Vikingeland area and marks a genuine milestone for the Danish park – its first coaster with inversions in over 40 years of operation.
Midgårdsormen will become the park’s tenth roller coaster, further strengthening Djurs Sommerland’s position as one of the leading coaster destinations in the Nordic region. The 603-metre layout was developed by Intamin AG and is based on the manufacturer’s Hot Racer platform. It features a single-rail track system, single-seat trains and a layout designed for rapid transitions and continuous movement. Two launches deliver sustained momentum, while the ride experience is defined by quick directional changes and repeated moments of weightlessness.
CEO Henrik B. Nielsen underlines the importance of the project: “This is an important step in the continued development of Djurs Sommerland. For the first time, we are introducing inversions while continuing to focus on experiences that appeal to a broad audience.” With a minimum height requirement of just 120 cm, Midgårdsormen is deliberately aimed at families yet still delivers a dynamic and intense experience with strong re-ride value – exactly what many guests are looking for when they want both action and repeatability.
The new coaster forms the centrepiece of a major 15,000 m² expansion of Vikingeland. In addition to Midgårdsormen, the area will gain new dining options, a large playground and additional retail facilities. The popular coaster Thors Hammer will remain an integral part of the themed area, offering even more variety.
Thematically, everything revolves around the Midgard Serpent. Continuous motion, sudden changes of direction and moments of unpredictability make the power and unpredictable nature of the mythical sea creature tangible. Guests will therefore not only ride a technically demanding coaster but also immerse themselves in an exciting Norse legend.
The investment is part of Djurs Sommerland’s long-term strategy to further strengthen its position as one of Northern Europe’s most attractive family destinations. Henrik B. Nielsen concludes: “Our ambition is to continue developing the park with high-quality attractions and experiences that enhance the overall guest experience.” With Midgårdsormen, Djurs Sommerland is delivering exactly on that promise – and finally giving coaster fans in Northern Europe the intense ride they have been waiting for.
