Harness Off: Security Dog Benny Retires in Style at the Disneyland Resort

A loyal four-legged colleague has completed his final shift. After six years as a security dog at the Disneyland Resort, Benny the cheerful Golden Retriever is finally hanging up his harness. With his infectious smile and ever-positive mood, the nearly nine-year-old dog brought joy not only to guests but also to cast members time and again. Now he is starting a new chapter full of belly rubs, playtime and adventures – accompanied by his devoted handler Kevin, who simply takes him home after his last shift.

The retirement party became a true highlight. Dozens of security cast members stopped by to say goodbye to the good dog. Everyone wanted selfies with him, and Benny experienced a very special moment: his very first hot dog. Because of the strict diet of the security dogs, this was a completely new experience for him. He excitedly ran around the party, clearly hoping for seconds. A small ceremony marked the emotional finale: Benny performed one last vehicle search, located the hidden fake substance and was showered with tennis balls and loud cheers as a reward. Yet even in the chaos, he went straight for his beloved red rubber ball first – the good boy knows his priorities.

Kevin, who has been working as Benny’s K9 handler for some time, spoke movingly about their special bond. “He’s a great dog,” Kevin said. “Very friendly, never gets aggressive, never barks at other dogs. It might be a biased opinion, but he’s one of the best dogs.” The two were matched after Kevin’s previous partner left the company. The trainer paired them perfectly. Kevin knew immediately: “This is the one I want.” Since then they have worked together in various areas of the resort, including the security zones at the entrances, where many guests may have passed Benny and Kevin on their way into the park.

The training of security dogs is demanding. Selected puppies undergo rigorous training at an off-site facility before being certified and beginning their service at the Happiest Place on Earth. Currently, 28 such dogs are on duty at the Disneyland Resort. They work in shifts – time in guest areas followed by recovery periods backstage. Kevin always kept a close eye on Benny to ensure he was doing well, since the dog cannot verbally communicate when he needs a proper break. “He was always on point,” Kevin recalls. “I never had to worry about him reacting to other dogs or chasing squirrels. He sees horses and other animals and just does his job.”

Benny is especially known for his contagious smile. “A lot of people come in and say, ‘Oh, look at that dog, he’s smiling,’” Kevin shares. “He just always brings the room up.” Even during serious tasks he stayed motivated and happy – “excited all the time,” as Kevin puts it. “We were taking him around, and he’s just happy running around, even though he’s about to turn nine. He really made my job as a handler easy.”

For Kevin the work continues: He will soon begin training with a new security dog who will join the K9 roster. For Benny, well-deserved retirement begins. At home another dog is already waiting to become fast friends with him. Kevin is looking forward to hikes and Benny’s first trip to the beach. “You’ve earned it, Benny!” That was the unanimous opinion of everyone who knew him. A true good boy is leaving the stage – leaving behind many smiling memories.
