Fire Department Builds Dam in Plopsaland Pond After Oil Spill

On Monday afternoon, the fire department in De Panne responded to an oil spill in the pond at Plopsaland Belgium. Oil had leaked into the water during maintenance work at the "Pirate Ship" attraction. Park employees alerted emergency services at 5:30 p.m., as the park was closed to visitors at the time and the oil threatened to spill into a neighboring waterway.

The Incident at the "Pirate Ship"

The incident occurred during ongoing maintenance work next to the "Pirate Ship" attraction. This swing ship, dating back to 1981, towers over the water feature and shapes the large pond beneath it. Oil had entered the theme park's large pond during the maintenance and was floating on the surface near the swing ship.

Fire Department Response

The fire department rushed to the scene and took measures to contain the oil. It constructed a dam in the pond to capture as much oil as possible. Additionally, firefighters placed several bags filled with absorbent granules to soak up the oil and then remove it. This contained much of the spill immediately.

Follow-up by Plopsaland

After the initial intervention, technicians from Plopsaland Belgium took over the cleanup. They cleaned the pond to remove all traces of the oil.
