New Walt Disney Attraction at Disneyland for 70th Anniversary

Disneyland Park is gearing up for its 70th anniversary and will open a new attraction in the Main Street Opera House on July 17, 2025: “Walt Disney – A Magical Life.” This presentation honors Walt Disney's life with a cinematic journey and a state-of-the-art Audio-Animatronics figure. Visitors can look forward to about 17 minutes of stories and anecdotes drawn from historical recordings, bringing Walt's vision to life.

Attraction Debut in the Main Street Opera House

“Walt Disney – A Magical Life” will debut on July 17, 2025, celebrating Walt Disney's vision that has shaped Disneyland Park since its opening on July 17, 1955. Guests will immerse themselves in a cinematic journey starting with the adapted film “One Man’s Dream” and culminating in a visit to Walt in his office. After the initial run, the attraction will alternate with “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln,” another presentation in the same theater.

Cinematic Portrayal of Walt's Life Journey

The attraction begins with an approximately 15-minute screening of the film “One Man’s Dream,” which highlights Walt's path from early ventures to his successes in Los Angeles and beyond. Historical footage and audio recordings in Walt's own voice tell the story. The highlight is the Audio-Animatronics figure in Walt's office, where visitors hear seamlessly compiled anecdotes, wisdom, and tales from multiple historical sources. This allows guests to encounter Walt in a way that was previously impossible.

Advances in Audio-Animatronics Technology

The Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney represents the most lifelike humanoid portrayal that Walt Disney Imagineering has ever created. The team worked on the project for over seven years, though the idea of a Walt figure has existed within the company for decades. The figure depicts Walt around the year 1963 and incorporates innovations such as a sparkle in the eyes, realistic skin through new methods, and the first lean-to-stand movement for a fully electric figure. Walt's characteristic gestures, including how he used his hands, as well as nuances of his speaking, were meticulously studied. The clothing – suit, shoes, tie, and rings – is based on careful research of historical sources. These technological leaps, referred to internally as moonshots, elevate the art of Audio-Animatronics to a new level.

Recreation of Walt's Office and the Rotating Stage

The office shown in the attraction is inspired by Walt's actual workspace in Burbank, similar to the set developed for his many television appearances. The stage in the Main Street Opera House will feature a rotating platform to allow switching between “Walt Disney – A Magical Life” and “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.” A new sign at the entrance will announce “Opera House now featuring two dramatic theater presentations!,” with the titles of both shows on either side.

“Evolution of a Dream” Gallery in the Foyer

In the foyer of the Main Street Opera House, the brand-new gallery “Evolution of a Dream” will display images, artifacts, and artworks – some never seen before – illustrating Disneyland before, during, and after the realization of Walt's dream. This includes pencil sketches and other concept artworks with preliminary plans for Disneyland. Walt Disney Imagineering and the Walt Disney Archives have curated relics and memorabilia from the park's early phases, including vintage merchandise, correspondence, and more. The Walt Disney Family Museum is lending over 30 original items, including objects from Walt's private apartment, which will be exhibited in Disneyland Park for the first time. A special exhibit on the history and evolution of Audio-Animatronics technology will present original and replicated figures dating back to the earliest developments, featuring designs from attractions like Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, “it’s a small world,” and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Personal Memories and Exhibits

A pre-show tribute video titled “Memories of Walt” shares touching anecdotes from people who worked alongside Walt Disney or were inspired by his vision. These stories reveal insights into Walt's tireless curiosity, hands-on leadership, and unwavering belief in creativity and people. As guests exit the theater, they will encounter another new exhibit highlighting the work of cast members through the years, along with a stunning new mural paying tribute to Disneyland's history, including its entertainment offerings, attractions, and what is yet to come.

Quotes on Walt's Legacy

Tom Fitzgerald, Senior Creative Executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, explains: “The 70th anniversary of Disneyland has given us a great opportunity to debut this attraction and remind guests of Walt Disney and his incredible journey. Creating this figure is an enormous responsibility, one that the team has taken very seriously, probably as seriously as Walt Disney did when creating the Audio-Animatronics figure of Abraham Lincoln so many decades ago. We hope to honor Walt through the art form he pioneered, and that ‘Walt Disney – A Magical Life’ will be a lasting tribute here in Disneyland ... the only Disney park where Walt ever walked.”

Jeff Shaver-Moskowitz, Portfolio Executive Creative Producer at Walt Disney Imagineering, adds: “This fitting tribute will give millions of guests a wish-fulfillment moment – to feel what it was like to be in Walt's presence. We collaborated closely with the Walt Disney Archives and The Walt Disney Family Museum to accurately depict the details of Walt and his office in this theatrical presentation. Most importantly, we aimed to create an Audio-Animatronics figure designed specifically for this attraction, delivering a portrayal that captures his nuances, hand gestures, facial expressions, and more – all the attributes that make this figure's performance uniquely Walt, rather than just a figure that looks like Walt.”

Kirsten Komoroske, Executive Director of The Walt Disney Family Museum, says: “The expertise and care that Walt Disney Imagineering has devoted to this project is nothing short of remarkable. Diane Disney Miller was driven to create The Walt Disney Family Museum not only to honor her father but also to expose the public to the extraordinary – and real – man behind the globally influential entertainment brand. We are endlessly grateful to The Walt Disney Company for their exceptional and considerate efforts to make Walt an integral part of the park experience. I think Walt would be thrilled by this blend of cutting-edge technology and artistry. And I think he would be touched by the tribute.”
