Plopsaland fans can finally celebrate: After years of uncertainty, the path is clear for the park’s first on-site themed hotel! Belgian operator Plopsa has cleared the final major hurdle and will build a modern on-site wastewater treatment plant directly on the grounds in Haßloch. This removes the last central obstacle to realizing the hotel and turning the park into a true multi-day destination.
More than 800,000 people visited Plopsaland Deutschland last year, with one million as the clear target. Instead of day trips only, guests should now be able to stay overnight – from short visits to full multi-day experiences in a themed hotel right on site. The local council already created the planning foundations in 2021, but the wastewater issue had blocked everything. The existing pond treatment plant cannot handle the expansion: Annual wastewater volume would rise from around 20,000 to up to 75,000 cubic meters. The Struktur- und Genehmigungsdirektion Süd had already ruled out continued use of the old plant for any larger development.
Bernd Beitz, director of the Plopsa Group in Germany, is visibly relieved: “The decisive factor for the path we are now taking was finally ending the legal uncertainty. For a long time, we were left hanging.” There is now a solid perspective for the first time. A first coordination meeting with the SGD Süd is already scheduled for next week to clarify technical requirements and the approval process.
Several options were examined over the years – including a new pressure pipeline with estimated costs of almost seven million euros, more than three million of which would have fallen on the park alone. In the end, Plopsa deliberately chose its own treatment plant. “Many people who actually had nothing to do with it would have had to be involved,” explains Beitz. The in-house solution is the fastest, simplest and most economical route for everyone involved – no additional contributions required, lower risk of objections. Implementation is expected within about one to one-and-a-half years.
At the same time, Plopsa plans to acquire the adjacent Aumühle grounds for additional overnight options such as holiday homes or apartments. Overall, the company intends to invest around 100 million euros in the site over the coming years. This also includes the new Plopsaqua water park on the former bathing park site. The building permit is already in place; only the approval for groundwater lowering is still pending.
The Haßloch coalition of SPD, FWG and CDU explicitly welcomes the decision as a “sustainable, approvable and economically sensible solution.” It creates planning security for both the park and the municipality and makes a resolution on the planned wastewater pressure pipeline unnecessary. For the entire region, this is great news: Plopsaland remains an important employer, economic driver and tourist magnet.
