A significant change is underway at the Efteling amusement park: the iconic steam locomotives are going green. While the nostalgic appearance of the trains will be preserved, their propulsion is being converted to electric motors. Starting winter 2024, the park will offer an environmentally friendly ride experience.

Historical Development and Current Decision

Efteling has announced the conversion of its steam locomotives to electric operation. Since acquiring the first locomotive Aagje in 1969, the park has operated on steam power. However, with the goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2030 and even climate-positive by 2032, a change was inevitable. This step is part of the park's broader efforts to make its attractions more sustainable.

Technical Implementation and Design Adjustments

The retrofitting is being carried out by the British company Alan Keef Ltd., a renowned specialist in narrow-gauge railways. Although the locomotives' engines are being converted to electric technology, their historical appearance will remain intact. Additionally, show effects are being added to authentically recreate the nostalgic steam train experience. These technical adjustments ensure that the original experience remains largely unchanged for visitors.

Long-term Vision and Partnership

This project continues the longstanding relationship between Efteling and Alan Keef Ltd. This family-owned company was responsible for constructing the fourth locomotive, Trijntje, in 1991. Alan Keef Ltd.'s expertise in electrifying railways makes them the ideal partner for this forward-looking project.

Cultural and Historical Value

The Efteling Steam Train Society plays a significant role in the park. Since its establishment in 1969, the trains and their infrastructure, designed by Anton Pieck, have contributed to the park's unique atmosphere. The conversion to electric locomotives is an example of how Efteling preserves its historical attractions while taking its environmental responsibilities seriously.
