Disney's Animal Kingdom Honors Gino on World Gorilla Day

On September 24, Disney's Animal Kingdom will celebrate World Gorilla Day by honoring the life and legacy of Gino, the 44-year-old western lowland gorilla. At the same time, the park pledges $500,000 in ongoing support for this critically endangered species through the Disney Conservation Fund. Gino, who inspired countless visitors and staff, left a lasting impression in the zoological community.

Gino's Remarkable Life at Disney's Animal Kingdom

Gino touched countless lives at Disney's Animal Kingdom through his playful spirit, gentle demeanor, and steady presence. Born on December 30, 1980, at Rotterdam Zoo in the Netherlands, Gino arrived at Disney's Animal Kingdom in 1997, before the park officially opened to guests. For nearly 30 years, the park was his home, and he loved the guests and staff just as much as they loved him. Gino became a majestic symbol not only in the park but also in the entire zoological community. He had a special gift for connecting with people, impressing parents with his gentle parenting style, delighting children with his playful nature, and even posing for the camera at times. These moments brought joy and sparked a lifelong passion for conservation and the protection of this magnificent species in many people. Dr. Beth Stevens, a founding member and former vice president of Disney's Animal Kingdom, described Gino as the pure definition of an exemplary silverback. He interacted with the world around him and was always aware of who was passing by. She recalled an unforgettable moment when Gino saw Roy Disney and began chest-beating, a powerful demonstration of dominance and connection that felt truly magical.

Gino as a Caring Father and Gentle Leader

Family stood at the center of Gino's world, and through close bonds with his troop, he showed how love, leadership, and connection are essential to a gorilla's life. Gino sired 14 offspring across seven states and made critical contributions to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan—a cooperative effort among accredited zoos to manage breeding appropriately. As a father, he lovingly protected his youngest offspring from the roughhousing of his older children and allowed his children to remain in the family troop much longer than is typical for silverbacks. In fact, his example of tolerance enabled keepers at another AZA-accredited zoo, where two of his sons now live, to smoothly introduce another male into their bachelor troop. Gino's calm demeanor and remarkable example will guide and benefit gorilla populations far beyond Disney for generations, and his lineage helps secure the health and genetic diversity of future gorilla generations. His contributions are so significant that Gino's likeness inspired the logo for the Gorilla Species Survival Plan. “All gorillas in AZA zoos are special, but some find their way into our hearts in a deeply touching way,” said Dr. Kristen Lukas, chair of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Gorilla Species Survival Plan. “Gino was one of those remarkable individuals with an exceptional character appreciated by gorillas, keepers, and guests alike. He was an exemplary parent, gentle leader, and model silverback who strengthened the gorilla SSP population. While we deeply mourn his passing, his legacy endures and inspires generations.”

Pioneering Advances in Animal Care

Through trusting relationships with veterinarians and animal care experts, Gino was open to participating in his own care—and changed the way many gorilla keepers now conduct medical examinations. He was one of the world's first gorillas to allow keepers to perform heart ultrasound examinations without anesthesia. This enabled a more accurate assessment of his heart health, which is crucial for gorillas since they are prone to heart disease. It also allowed his keepers to train and develop important techniques that benefit gorillas in care around the world. Thanks to the path Gino paved, dozens of zoos have successfully applied these methods to train gorillas for procedures without anesthesia, helping veterinarians detect medical issues early and contribute to global knowledge that protects gorillas everywhere.

How Disney Supports Gorillas in the Wild

Disney's legacy of protecting nature's magic through the Disney Conservation Fund began at Disney's Animal Kingdom, built on a deep responsibility to secure a future for wildlife—including gorillas like Gino. Since then, the DCF has supported community-based efforts focused on gorilla recovery in most countries where they still occur. Over the past 30 years, the DCF has directed more than $4.5 million in support to protect every subspecies of gorillas and the habitats they call home. “Gino was a true ambassador for gorillas everywhere. His life and care inspired the founding of GRACE, the first and only sanctuary for critically endangered Grauer's gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo,” said Dr. Katie Fawcett, executive director of GRACE Gorillas. “Today, rescued gorillas are returned to a life in the wild. Gino's legacy continues to shape conservation and the well-being of gorillas in the heart of the Congo rainforest and inspires the creation of protected habitats where people, forests, and wildlife thrive. Thank you, Gino, for connecting continents, opening hearts, and changing lives.” As Disney celebrates Gino and his enormous impact, it is also proud to continue its commitment to gorillas with $500,000 in support for the vital work of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center (GRACE). These two highly regarded organizations help support community efforts to collectively protect 3,500 square kilometers of forest corridor habitat critical to the survival of the critically endangered eastern lowland gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo. “We celebrate Gino's legacy not only in the joy he brought to those who visited him but in the awareness he created for the urgent need to protect gorillas in the wild. On this World Gorilla Day, the inspiration from Gino's life is a reminder that together we can secure a future for gorillas and their forest homes that help sustain a healthy planet for all of us,” said Dr. Tara Stoinski, CEO and chief scientific officer of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. While deeply mourning this profound loss, Disney also celebrates the extraordinary gift of Gino's life.
