As part of the 50th anniversary of Europa-Park, the mascots Ed and Edda embarked on an extraordinary adventure in the stratosphere. On board a balloon equipped with state-of-the-art technology, they launched from the park's Portuguese-themed area. The flight reached nearly 33 kilometers in altitude and concluded with a gentle landing after covering a distance of 103 kilometers.
Launch of the High-Altitude Flight
The stratospheric flight's launch took place in the Portuguese-themed area of Germany's largest amusement park. Ed and Edda, the Europa-Park mascots, wore custom-made spacesuits and were attached to the balloon. The balloon was fitted with high-resolution cameras as well as navigation and tracking technology to document the journey into lofty heights. Fitting the anniversary motto “Celebrating Under the Stars,” this high-altitude flight provided a special link to the space theme.
Course of the Flight
During the ascent, the balloon reached a height of nearly 33 kilometers. Under the pressure of the stratosphere, the balloon eventually burst, leading to spectacular images and fascinating video material. At that moment, colorful flower seeds rained down over southern Baden, sending a greeting to nature. The entire flight path covered an impressive 103 kilometers.
Landing of the Mascots
After a total flight time of 2 hours and 47 minutes, Ed and Edda landed safely in a cornfield near Singen, close to the Swiss border. The descent occurred at a top speed of 247.5 km/h and proceeded without incident.
