Creature From the Black Lagoon Returns to Dark Universe After 4 Years

Is the Creature from the Black Lagoon really on his way to an attraction of his own in Dark Universe? Four years after the sudden closure of Classic Monsters Cafe, statues of the Universal icon have appeared in Epic Universe's expansion area. They are fueling the question fans keep asking, and Universal has not yet answered it publicly: What's next for the village of Darkmoor?

Universal's classic monsters have a new home in Orlando. Dark Universe, which opened in May 2025 together with Epic Universe, gives Universal Orlando Resort a permanent destination built around the famous monster roster. For the first time, the characters also have a complete land of their own. Guests enter the shadowy village of Darkmoor, where Frankenstein's Monster, the Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolf Man, and other characters have a far greater presence than they have had in years at Universal Orlando Resort. The land includes Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, Curse of the Werewolf, themed dining, character encounters, and numerous references to Universal's long horror history. But Dark Universe does not have to remain the size it is today.

Attention is increasingly turning to an expansion area near the existing land, and Universal's activities there have opened the door to numerous possibilities. Universal has not publicly revealed exactly what will occupy Dark Universe's expansion area. That lack of an announcement has not stopped the rumors. One of the most persistent possibilities involves a future Creature from the Black Lagoon attraction. The classic monster remains a natural candidate for a larger role, especially since Universal has already featured several other characters throughout Dark Universe. A Creature from the Black Lagoon attraction is not confirmed, so any possible ride remains firmly in rumor territory.

The Creature himself has now appeared in an unexpected place. More interesting still, Universal did not create this particular version of the Creature from the Black Lagoon for Epic Universe. He comes from another part of Universal Orlando Resort's past. X user "bioreconstruct" recently captured an aerial photo of Dark Universe's expansion area that shows three recognizable pieces of Universal history. Statues depicting Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolf Man, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon were visible behind Frankenstein Manor.

Longtime guests of Universal Orlando Resort may recognize them immediately. The three monster statues previously stood in Classic Monsters Cafe at Universal Studios Florida, which closed suddenly in May 2022 after more than 20 years of operation. Minion Cafe later replaced the restaurant when Universal transformed that part of Universal Studios Florida into Minion Land. Universal, however, has apparently not forgotten some of the old restaurant's best-known decorations. The aerial photo showed all three statues inside Dark Universe's expansion zone, along with containers used to sort and haul away materials. Four years after the closure of Classic Monsters Cafe, these decades-old Universal icons have found their way back into the world of the monsters.

Why exactly the statues are standing in the expansion area remains unclear. One possibility is that Universal could reuse them at a future dining location. That would create an interesting connection between Classic Monsters Cafe and Dark Universe and give longtime fans another piece of nostalgia from Universal Studios Florida. There is another possibility worth watching, though. Permits tied to the expansion have pointed to an attraction of some kind. If Universal is developing another Dark Universe experience, could these statues eventually become part of the queue, the exterior theming, or the surroundings? That is entirely possible, although nothing currently confirms that plan. They could also merely be in temporary storage while Universal decides where they belong.

Regardless of their later destination, the return of Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolf Man, and especially the Creature from the Black Lagoon feels fitting. Dark Universe is exactly the place these pieces of Universal history belong. And the timing will only further fuel the rumors about the expansion. The Creature from the Black Lagoon is not the only classic monster tied to rumors about Dark Universe's future. An attraction for the Bride of Frankenstein has also been discussed as a possible addition. Another idea circulating is an eerie playground or children's area that could give younger Epic Universe guests another activity in a land currently defined by darker experiences. Universal has confirmed neither concept.

Even so, the Creature from the Black Lagoon remains at the center of attention surrounding the expansion. He has a long history with Universal but currently lacks a major attraction presence of the kind Frankenstein's Monster and the Wolf Man enjoy. Fans should not, for now, take three statues as confirmation that a Creature from the Black Lagoon attraction is coming. Universal has not announced one. Fans can say that pieces of Classic Monsters Cafe have survived the closure of their former home and have now appeared in Dark Universe's expansion area. That is a fairly remarkable destination for decorations that once greeted guests at the restaurant in Universal Studios Florida. Whether they become part of a restaurant, appear around a future attraction, or serve an entirely different purpose remains to be seen. But after four years away, the Creature from the Black Lagoon has officially reappeared at Universal Orlando Resort. And he could hardly have picked a more fitting place for his return.
