Haunted Mansion May Get Wooded Overflow Queue at Magic Kingdom

Anyone combing through the thousands of photos from this year's D23 Expo will stumble across a detail at the edge of the Piston Peak model: a new wooded path right next to the mansion at Magic Kingdom. Does it lead anywhere — or is this the overflow queue that's already been spilling past the entrance so often in 2026?

Thousands more photos from the expo are still being reviewed. Imagineers included existing Frontierland and Liberty Square buildings along the edges of the exhibit, so guests can see how the whole area fits together. Next to the Haunted Mansion, that extra context reveals a new wooded path that looks like a wooded overflow queue for the attraction.

The Piston Peak National Park model was a highlight of this year's D23 Expo. It was on display all three days in the Imagineering: Horizons pavilion, and hundreds of visitors studied it up close. Imagineers built the surrounding Frontierland and Liberty Square context right into the exhibit. That includes a rough, unthemed representation of the Haunted Mansion, placed where the new Cars-themed land meets the existing Magic Kingdom. Not far from there, a tree-lined path winds through the wooded area between the attraction and Piston Peak.

A closer look at the entrance shows the layout: The mansion's canopy covers the existing queue, which was built for the attraction's current footprint. Right beside it, a new path winds along — slightly narrower and wooded on both sides. It sits next to the mansion's queue and also beside the main flow of guests heading toward Piston Peak. The path appears self-contained. It doesn't actually lead anywhere. Instead, it looks like an out-and-back walkway that serves no functional purpose in Piston Peak. Given that placement, the natural interpretation is that Imagineers are planning a new overflow queue. It would let the Haunted Mansion keep taking in large crowds without those guests spilling onto or blocking the new walkways.

The Haunted Mansion's current extended-queue setup has been in flux for most of 2026. The queue often stretches past the entrance arches. It frequently runs along the Piston Peak construction walls toward the former Liberty Square Riverboat landing. Work has also been visible on a building that used to be part of the extended queue but now sits on the Piston Peak construction site. That building is not shown in this model.

Once Piston Peak National Park and the new walkways eventually open, they will send significantly more foot traffic right past the mansion's front door. A new wooded queue path built along the edge of the mansion would give Disney the ability to take in hundreds of additional guests at a time without narrowing or rerouting the new thoroughfares. For Haunted Mansion fans, the model shows how the classic attraction is meant to work alongside the future Cars-themed land — with room for the queue, without sacrificing the new walkways.
