Hogwarts Goes Dark: Universal Brings Back Dark Arts in 11 Days

Hogwarts Castle is about to go dark again, and Universal Orlando Resort has made it official. In 11 days, one of Universal Orlando's most famous landmarks will look very different after sunset. Dark Arts at Hogwarts Castle returns Sept. 5 through Nov. 1 on select dates at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade in Universal's Islands of Adventure. Death Eaters will already be roaming Diagon Alley before then. For fans of the Wizarding World, fall at the resort becomes a question of which side they stand on.

Starting Sept. 5, the castle once again falls under the influence of Lord Voldemort, Dementors, Death Eaters and other dark forces. Rather than simply lighting Hogwarts with colorful projections, Dark Arts turns the castle into the centerpiece of a far more eerie nighttime experience. As darkness settles over Hogsmeade, ominous images appear on the facade. Dementors, Death Eaters and other creatures take over through projection effects, accompanied by music, and Lord Voldemort himself appears as the experience reaches its climax. Universal describes the show as a spectacle of light and music that brings some of the darkest characters and creatures of the Wizarding World directly to Hogwarts. The timing also gives Universal another major nighttime offering during one of the busiest stretches of its fall calendar.

The return hits during 25 Years of Magic, marking the 25th anniversary of the first Harry Potter film. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) arrived in theaters 25 years ago and launched the film series that later became the foundation for Universal's Wizarding World lands.

The resort now includes three separate Wizarding World destinations spread across its theme parks: Hogsmeade in Universal's Islands of Adventure, Diagon Alley in Universal Studios Florida, and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, which opened in May 2025 along with Universal Epic Universe. This fall, Universal is turning its focus back to two of its original Wizarding World locations.

No need to wait until Sept. 5 for the darker side of the Wizarding World. Death Eaters will roam Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida on select dates beginning Aug. 27. They serve Lord Voldemort, and guests can encounter the characters in the land as they move through the streets and try to determine where visitors' loyalties lie. Unlike Dark Arts at Hogwarts Castle, this is not a projection show. The appearances run on select dates through Nov. 1. The Aug. 27 start also comes just before Halloween Horror Nights begins Aug. 28 at Universal Studios Florida.

Hogwarts Castle remains the towering centerpiece behind Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey during the day. Once the sun drops, projections and music change the look as familiar villains and creatures take over the exterior. Guests visiting Universal Orlando in September and October get two very different versions of Hogsmeade — it just depends when they walk in. Islands of Adventure picks up a nighttime extra while Halloween Horror Nights takes over Universal Studios Florida next door on select evenings. Universal is leaning heavily into darker entertainment across the resort this time of year, and the Wizarding World fits naturally into that seasonal atmosphere.

Anyone hoping to see Hogwarts Castle transformed has nearly two months. Dark Arts at Hogwarts Castle begins Sept. 5 and runs on select dates through Nov. 1. Death Eaters in Diagon Alley start even earlier, appearing on select dates from Aug. 27 through Nov. 1. Universal has not announced that Hogwarts Castle itself will close as part of the change. The dark transformation takes place after sunset, when the Dark Arts presentation takes over the facade. For visitors who have not yet seen the nighttime show, the biggest change is the familiar Hogwarts facade becoming a canvas for some of the most menacing figures in the Wizarding World. Dementors descend. Death Eaters emerge, and dark magic spreads across the castle. Starting Sept. 5, Lord Voldemort once again takes control of Hogwarts at Universal Orlando Resort.
