Efteling's Electrically Powered Steam Train Takes First Ride

This morning, the steam locomotive Aagje at the Efteling theme park in Kaatsheuvel embarked on its first journey with visitors after a year-long conversion in England. Equipped with an electric drive, the train ride is now more sustainable—a key milestone for Efteling, which aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2030. The locomotive’s nostalgic design, crafted by Anton Pieck in 1969, remains fully intact, preserving its timeless charm.

Sustainability Meets Tradition

The transformation of Aagje stands out as a unique project, marking the first time a historical locomotive of this type has undergone such a conversion. "This upgrade is essential to meet our climate goals while ensuring the steam train’s nostalgic look and feel endure," said General Director Fons Jurgens. "The change is also reversible, safeguarding the locomotive’s historical value." With its steam boiler due for replacement, Aagje became the prime candidate for the electric retrofit. A new tender now propels the locomotive and pulls the train, yet operators still use the original levers. Routine maintenance, like lubricating and polishing, continues as before. To maintain the authentic experience, show effects such as steam and the iconic whistle sound have been cleverly integrated. Retired in 1969 and a fixture at Efteling ever since, Aagje is now poised for a modern chapter.

History of the Efteling Steam Train Company

Founded in 1969, the Efteling Steam Train Company oversees all locomotives, stations, platforms, and tracks within the park. Aagje, originally from the Arnhem brickworks IJsseloord, boasts a 60 cm gauge—perfect for shuttling visitors. Adorned with copper accents, its wagons were custom-built by Efteling following Anton Pieck’s designs, as were the park’s two stations. Since 1984, the steam train has offered a scenic three-kilometer loop. The park’s fleet includes four locomotives: Aagje (1911), Moortje (1907), Neefje (1914—now a photo object since 2001), and Trijntje (1991). Three remain in active service.

A Step Towards Climate Neutrality

By electrifying Aagje, Efteling underscores its commitment to sustainability without sacrificing its historical ambiance. The steam train ride continues to captivate visitors, seamlessly blending tradition with cutting-edge technology.
